22 THNK1994 MUSEUM

FEMINIST MICROMUSEUM

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN

194 SQUARE FEET

Viviana Olen and Matt Harkins started the THNK1994 Museum in the hallway of their railroad apartment. The subject matter? The Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan incident. In part because of the tiny museum’s colossal success—and, in part, because they wanted their apartment back—the BFFs have moved the museum into a former hair salon in Bed-Stuy.

Viviana: “Our subject matter is very niche. The theme running throughout all the exhibits is how the media devours women in the public eye.

“We were roommates and best friends. We moved into an apartment in Williamsburg with a 23-foot-long hallway and no living room. We’re like, ‘We’ve got to do something with that hallway.’

“One winter night Matt watched the documentary called The Price of Gold on Netflix. It told the story of ice-skater Nancy Kerrigan getting clubbed in the leg by a hitman hired by the ex-husband of her archrival Tonya Harding. Matt’s like, ‘You’ve got to come home and watch this.’ I was on a date. I was like, ‘I’m on my way.’ We became obsessed. It happened right before the Winter Olympics in 1994. We were only six and seven when it happened.

“Matt was working at the 9/11 museum at the time and he was upset because nobody there wanted to talk about Nancy and Tonya. I was like, ‘A-la-la, Tonya and Nancy Museum!’ We put it on Kick-starter, and the response was insane. People wanted to not only revisit the story but to tell their stories.”
